Hides

Leather Naturally carries only the finest hides and leathers!  Our goal is to make sure that you are satisfied with the hide you receive.  If we mark a hide at a square foot price then that how we sell it.  Unlike our competitors that price it by the square foot and sell it by the hide if you need only one square foot of leather that is what we will happily sell you.  No extra charges for small or cut orders here. All leathers listed on this page are subject to availability.  Prices are subject to change due to market conditions as well as the rising fuel costs.  We will do our best to keep our prices as low as possible.  Colors shown are for reference only. Since leather is a natural substance color may and will vary slightly from the reference color shown here.  If you are looking for something special or something not listed here please contact us since we have many sources available to us and can most likely meet your needs.  Please note that some colors are in stock and some are by special order.  Special order colors are subject to a square foot minimum order.  Please contact us for more information. Please note that not all colors are in stock.

Rawhide
Rawhide has been used for centuries in making drum heads, shields, lamp shades, moccasin soles and many other projects.  It also makes great thongs and laces.  Rawhide is very rigid because it has not been tanned, it has only been de-haired and cured. When soaked in water it becomes pliable, allowing it to be molded or shaped.  During the drying process, rawhide shrinks, stiffens and generally retains whatever shape it was given.
We have the following rawhides available:
Deer, Goat, Elk, Cow (natural or bleached) Buffalo, and hair on Goat.

Convert yardage into Leather footage.
Leather is measured in square feet, but fabric is measured in yards.
The following converting factors are used to convert yardage into square feet:
36" wide fabric: 9
45" wider fabric: 11
54" wide fabric: 13
EXAMPLE:
If your pattern calls for 3 yards of 45" wide fabric, multiply 3x11, then add 15% for cutting loss: 3X11=33sq ft, add 15%  or 5 sq ft:
33 +15%= 38 sq ft of leather.

Thickness Chart
2-3oz.  (2/64-3/64") approximately 1/32" thick.  The lightest weight cowhide. Primely used to line wallets, belts, and small accessories.  This top grain light weight cowhide is flexible, yet has enough body for tooling.
3-4oz. (3/64-4/64") approximately 1/16" thick. Used for billfold backs, heavy zipper gussets or any projects where the leather needs more body than comparable weight calfskin.
4-5oz. (4/64-5/64") approximately 5/64" thick.  Essentially an intermediate weight which is sometimes used for slightly heavier weight articles than described above or to make slightly lighter weight articles in the category below. A very versatile weight.
6-7oz. (6/64-7/64") approximately 7/64" thick. Ideal weight for most carved handbags. Most craftsman prefer 6-7 oz leather for ladies contour belts, arm straps and shoulder straps for handbags.
8-9oz. (8/64-9/64:) approximately 9/54" thick.  Largest selling weight.  This weight has the heft and substance that makes it ideal for belts, holsters, saddle bags, motorcycle accessories etc.
9-10oz. (9/64-10/64") approximately 5/32" thick.  Used primarily for heavier items listed above.
10-11oz. (10/64-11/64") approximately 6/32" thick.  Weight belts, lineman's belts, some saddlery and tack etc., where strength and body is required.
12-14oz. (12/64-14/64") approximately 1/4" thick.  Ideal for saddlery, tack and armor.  Often call saddle skirting.
